History of the Church
Genesis
Around 1976, the founder of MBCLA, Pastor Y.K. Chang, had a vision of ‘five churches’ one of which eventually developed into MBCSFV. The congregation that made MBCSFV started at a hamburger store and eventually moved to brother Yueh’s house in September of 1976. MBCSFV was officially established as a branch in 1979 and held its first Sunday morning service on October 7th. The church started to grow but a problem arose when the building that MBCSFV had been meeting at was bought and a new church was moving in thus the search for a new meeting place was once again underway.
Early Years
The church moved to Van Nuys First Baptist Church on June 1, 1980 which was a real blessing because the location was rented to the church for a token rent of $50. Not only was the church a better location than the previous building it allowed for the church to incorporate kids into their Sunday school. However, the church was not without hardships since the Pastor of the church at the time, Pastor Paul Chang left the church. While the church did suffer a bit there was a lot of good going on at the church still and many traditions were started that MBCSFV still observes and cherishes to this day, for example, the Thanksgiving potluck dinner and wearing flowers on Mother’s Day. Pastor Chia-Lu Pan joined the church as its pastor on July 16, 1982. Pastor Pan did wonders for the church and reluctantly resigned in May 1983 due to illness but not without laying a strong foundation for the church.
Establishment
In November 1983 a Pastor Search Committee was formed while an interim pastor was found and all other church activities proceeded as usual. Pastor Daniel Hsu was serving at Fresno Chinese Baptist Church and was invited to speak at a youth retreat. It was because of this retreat and the exposure of Pastor Hsu to the Search Committee that Pastor Hsu became the top choice. With much prayer and timing on God’s part Pastor Hsu left the Fresno church in good hands and joined MBCSFV. In 1984, five years of germination, MBCSFV was officially chartered and dedicated to spread the message of Christ for the glory of God. In 1986, Pastor Hsu and Peter Yao saw a lot on the corner of Nordhoff and Zelzah going for about a fourth of the usual price in that neighborhood. Although the cost was a bit high and there were other bidders and various obstacles God allowed for MBCSFV to purchase the land and proceed from there.
Building
Finally, on September 1, 1991, this Sunday marked the groundbreaking ceremony where brothers and sisters and children alike were eager to pick up a shovel and be a part of this monumental occasion. With the permission from the city MBCSFV began designing a building which had “the overall external appearance [that] blends with the neighborhood.” The current building that stands is only the first phase of a two phase building plan. The church received its official usage permit on June 3rd 1994. The church began with the aim of being a “golden lampstand” in the heart of the San Fernando Valley and continues to shine brightly to this day.
